Swag on Target

swagTheories abound as to the exact meaning and origin of the word “swag:”

  • Some say it originally referred to goods stolen by a burglar.
  • Others believe it to be an acronym standing for phrases such as:
    • Souvenirs, Wearables, And Gifts
    • Stuff We All Get
    • Stuff We Are Given
    • Stuff We Ain’t Got
    • Sealed With A Gift
  • Merriam Webster defines it as, “a noun used to describe promotional items since the 1960’s” — referring to everything from promotional records sent to radio stations to free slippers for airline passengers.olive-oil-setWhatever its origin, the term caught on when Hollywood actors and actresses started receiving bags of valuables at award shows. This practice broadened the meaning and eventually came to encompass anything given to an attendee of an event (such as a conference) as a promotional gift.

At On Target Promotions, we use the term “swag” to refer to fun, free branding items placed in bags of exited award winners and party-goers as well as trade show attendees. And it is our pleasure to offer the best available swag for our customers, clients, vendors and friends.

Although people tend to think of swag in terms of common items such as T-shirts, mugs and pens, your options for branded gifting are virtually endless. And the great thing about swag is that it has staying power. When you give a prospect or client a unique item that they can use time and again, your brand will be reinforced each time the logo-d item is used.

OnTarget Promotions helps hundreds of clients across Southern California use swag to great effect. Here is what one such customer has to say:

“On Target Promotions has been supporting Sysco Riverside since its founding in 2013. The service we have received has been exemplary. The entire team at On Target Promotions has a great ability to help us find the items we need to brand our company and satisfy our customers.

The crew there does more than source logo items for us. They help us to come up with the right items in sometimes very unrealistic timelines and still manage to come through. We have worked with over 25 brands and purchased hundreds of individual line items through On Target Promotions. Their communication and shipment tracking is always extremely thorough.”

Affordable Holiday Gifts On Target

christmas-sack-964342_960_720According to the National Retailer’s Association, consumers will spend nearly four percent more this year on holiday gifts than they did in 2015. In fact, according to NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay, “All of the fundamentals are in a good place, giving strength to consumers and leading us to believe that this will be a very positive holiday season.

The NRF holiday sales forecast is based on an economic model which uses several indicators such as consumer credit, disposable personal income and previous monthly retail sales releases. Their data shows an average increase in holiday sales for the past 10 years of 2.5 percent.

More projections about Holiday Spending in 2016:person-on-package

  • Analysts with financial firm Apprisen say that the average U.S. consumer spent about $830 on Christmas gifts last year.
  • The International Council of Shopping Centers also gave a rosy projection, forecasting a 3.3% spending increase at physical stores, compared with a 2.2% gain in sales last year.
  • Most experts agree that online shopping will increase at a much quicker rate than sales in storefronts, as consumer confidence in e-commerce grows.

Holiday Gift Guide On Trend

img_0344Have you ever opened a beautifully wrapped holiday gift only to find a present that leaves you scratching your head?

Whether the gifts you give this year are meant for a distant relative, your closest friend, a prospect, or your best client, don’t be the one who sends something weird. After all; the holidays are the perfect time to show people you care – by giving them something that will WOW! And when you plan ahead, you will be able to personalize your offerings, so the recipient will think of you every time they use your gift. To help, we looked to retail trends so you can formulate an impressive list of brand-able holiday swag.

Top 10 Holiday Gift-Giving Trendsimg_0341

1. Tech. Flexible Bluetooth keyboards, smartphone stands, cord organizers, laptop cases and tablet “skins,” flash drives, “tile” key-locators, automated vacuum cleaners, tech-touch gloves, virtual reality viewers, electronic readers, power chargers, etc.

2. Drones. While we could have classified dynamic-remotely-operated-navigation-equipment under “tech,” we think this gift-giving trend merits its own category, because drones are not just for paparazzi and film crews anymore. This is owed, in part, to the fact that many are surprisingly affordable.

3. Wearables. You can’t go wrong with a T-shirt, sweatshirt or polo shirt. People love things they can wear. Also, don’t forget about wearable tech – fitness watches & trackers, Bluetooth speakers, headphones, etc. img_0343

4. Old School. This category signals a return to simpler times, before people used cellphones as MP3 players, video players and alarm clocks. If you opt to go with something nostalgic, the possibilities are virtually endless. Think desk clocks and desk sets or briefcases and pens or casual items like baseball caps, coffee mugs and candy. Or amp up your gift by assembling a “themed” basket, like “Movie Night,” – filled with fun items such as theater tickets, popcorn and bottles of soda, or “Golf Day,” featuring tee time treats, golf balls, course gift certificates and a branded golf towel. img_0339

5. Alcohol. These gifts go beyond bottles of wine or cases of scotch. Sophisticated gift-givers in 2016 are turning to a myriad of personalized alcohol-related ideas: bottle openers, wine aerators, bottle caddies, breath alcohol meters, flasks, bar sets, whiskey stones, cork cages, beer-chilling coaster sets, and customized shot glasses…to name a few. img_0337

6. Gift Cards. Neiman Marcus was the first company to make gift cards, which they sold in stores starting in 1994. But gift cards didn’t emerge as a “go-to” gift item until Blockbuster replaced their own rampantly counterfeited gift certificates with plastic cards. Once Starbucks entered the game in 2001, the rest – as they say – is history.

7. Executive Gifts. From classic desk sets to stylish totes to personalized styluses, business clients will appreciate your attention to detail. If the recipient is well traveled, consider a keyed laptop lock, an “anywhere” mouse, 3-D puzzles, a custom pen and pencil set, engraved paperweights, luggage tags, or a leather passport case.

8. Food Glorious Food. No matter the era, people love gifts they can eat. Did you know that you can brand items in virtually every category? To go high end, choose caviar tins and crackers with champagne. More low brow? How about jars of pesto or spaghetti sauce and dried pasta along with a bottle of Chianti. img_0338

9. Anti-Stress. What most professionals have in common is the propensity to feel stress.
To combat the trend, we recommend gifts designed to lighten the load. Stress balls, personal massagers, scented candles and sachets, tabletop fountains, and plants are just a few ideas for the entrepreneur on your list who has a lot on his or her plate.

10. High Style. Soft leather gloves, sunglasses and watches can melt the hearts of fashion-loving friends. So, to appeal to this crowd, order a fine leather wallet, custom cufflinks, a pocket watch, a leather portfolio or journal, or business card case.

Our choices this holiday season follow retail favorites. Since your clients and employees are already looking that direction, give them something that trends –beer flights, oil & vinegar sets, etched wine bottles, mini drones, or fitness trackers. Old school is also big, with holiday ornaments reemerging as gifts as well as holiday fundraisers.

Holiday Greeting On Target

seed-paper-cardsIn this day of electronic everything, a trip to the mailbox may offer little more than bills and fliers addressed to: “current resident.” Greeting cards are the brilliant exception, as recipients celebrate the personal opportunity to open a beautiful, heartfelt, customized 3-D greeting to hold and prominently display.

According to the Greeting Card Association, the tradition of sending greeting cards can be traced back to the ancient Chinese, who exchanged messages of goodwill to celebrate the New Year, and to the early Egyptians, who conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls. By the early 15th century, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe.Envelope with blank message card

History of Greeting Cards:

  • By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe.
  • The Germans are known to have printed New Year’s greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400.
  • Handmade paper Valentines were exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s.
  • With the introduction of the postage stamp in the 1840s as well as advances in printing and mechanization, cards emerged from an expensive, handmade and hand-delivered gift to a popular, affordable means of personal communication.
  • The first known published Christmas card appeared in London in 1843, when Sir Henry Cole hired an artist to design a holiday card that he could send to his friends and acquaintances. Demand for similar cards grew, so Cole began selling them for one shilling each.White envelope on wooden background with pine cones and Christmas gift
  • As printing methods improved, Christmas cards became much more popular and were produced in large numbers from about 1860.Prensa Litografica
  • The first to bring greeting cards to America was a German immigrant named Louis Prang, whose Boston-based lithograph business succeeded, in part, because he expertly produced cards featuring the reproduction of famous paintings. In 1875, he introduced the first complete line of mass-produced Christmas cards to the American public.
  • In the early 1930s, American publishers adopted the use of color lithography, which propelled expansion of the U.S. greeting card industry.
  • During World War II, the industry rallied for the war effort, helping the government sell war bonds and providing cards for soldiers overseas.
  • By the 1950s, a long card with a short punch line (aka the studio card) firmly established the popularity of humor in American greeting cards.

Great Choices for On Target Clientsseed-paper-card-also

Today, holiday greeting cards are the perfect way to stand out in your customers’ and employees hearts, minds and mailboxes. Ordering your company’s greeting cards from On Target Promotions is as easy as creating the electronic equivalent, which may end up in a spam folder or quickly forgotten even if it is clicked and read.

seed-paper-card-tooOur clients enjoy a wide variety of greeting card styles from which to choose. Our favorite is the eco-friendly seeded greeting card. The card comes with an ornament to hang on the tree during the holidays and then, when the tree is tossed into the trash or boxed away, can be planted. The resulting wildflowers will thrill your clients not just during the holidays but throughout the New Year. What a great value –  an eco-friendly card, ornament, and a flowering plant all in one!
